I think the positives of Twitter outweigh the negatives. It's all about just posting what you're doing, or using it to see what others are doing, as well as following news, celebrities, etc. The good thing about it is that you can choose who to follow, who to not follow, who to block, or whether you want to set your page to private. It's limited in what you can do in that it's not a full blown interactive social media site like Facebook, but I think it's a really cool way to interact, and that it does what it's meant for really well.
On the other hand, Facebook is totally different. While you can still post statuses (what you're doing) and follow people (add them as friends), there is more you can do with it. You can add a lot more information about yourself. You can join groups and become a fan of things. You can post discussions, post photo albums, and post if you will be attending a certain event or not.
I wouldnt necessarily say that either has negatives, because each individual user can choose what he or she wants to use the site for. There are many options, and that's what is so great about social networking sites. Facebook and Twitter have similarities and differences, and there are great reasons to use (or not use, if you so choose) either site.
I don't really think someone will ever combine the two. Since there are already similarities between Twitter and Facebook and they share some aspects, I'm sure that they will stay separate services. That's not to say that someone won't come out with yet another social networking site that will top MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter in the future. Who knows...?
